History has shown that what makes a masterpiece isn't plot, but characterization. Writers such as William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, and John Steinbeck used plot as a structure on which to build primarily character based stories.

In his book Characters and Viewpoint writer Orson Scott Card provides a set of tools from which to build effective characters.

In 1857 Charles Darwin brought about a revolution with his book on evolution, The Origin of Species. It's since become commonly accepted that human traits are the result of natural selection, but only in recent years has this been applied to psychology.
