Movies such as Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, and Full Metal Jacket accomplished this with a blend of chaos and realism that shocked audiences. Stephen Crane's book The Red Badge of Courage meets or surpasses them all.

The archetypal mad scientist stands over a table on which a grotesque body lays. Electricity arcs and crackles, and Dr. Frankenstein screams with glee, "It's alive! It's alive!"

As an ex-physics student and reductionist I tend to see physical and mathematical concepts in everyday places. This is especially true in Sun Tzu's The Art Of War, though its true inspiration is Taoism. As the Tao would say, we must take a balanced approach and view the book from the eyes of both West and East.
